Farrell pads absorb more impact that other hockey pads, which greatly reduces your chances of getting injuries like shoulder separations. They are also more flexible than other pads, which allows you to have greatly increased freedom of movement. Farrell pads wick moisture away, let heat out and let cooling air in, which will increase your stamina in game. It's like wearing a bulky sweatshirt rather than a rigid outer frame when you play, and it protects you better. Try a set on at your local Pro Shop and feel the difference.
Yes, they can be machine washed, but HANG DRY ONLY, DO NOT PLACE IN DRYER. To wash, take off plastic caps and plates and wash in cold water with a mild detergent.
The shoulder caps should slightly overlap the front chest plates to protect the collarbone, the back plates should be positioned over the shoulder blades and the lower back plate should rest in the small of the back. Bicep plates should be positioned directly above the elbow pad with about 1" (25mm) of space between. Some senior, non-checking, leagues play without plates and caps attached.
Yes, there is a sewn-in plate in the black strip in the center.
The cubes are spaced close enough together so that a puck or stick shaft cannot fit between them.
Although the pads are in use throughout NHL, college teams and Major Junior leagues, licensing deals between those organizations and name brand manufacturers restrict the use of equipment, which is visible in games to only the licensed brands. Look for Farrell showing under jerseys during fights and scoring celebrations. Take a look at our video archives for examples.
Farrell pads have been in use at all levels for five years, but have only been available to local retailers in New England. Starting in 2007, the pads will be available at select Pro Shops across the US and Canada.
Yes, we're getting good support from players and equipment managers in the NHL, college and Major Juniors.
It depends on your play style. Farrell pads are very durable and some are starting their fourth season in leagues and college teams.
Fights happen in hockey, and Farrell pads took that into consideration in the design. The flexible construction and Velcro fasteners tear away if held by an opponent in a fight so the pads cannot be used as a hold-point. This gives our players a distinct advantage should a fight break out. We've heard that body shots don't seem to hurt as much with our pads as well.
